This 4/20 hit a little different in Massachusetts.
Alongside the usual celebrations, the state rolled out a major update to cannabis laws, one that directly changes how much you can buy in a single visit.
The Big Change: From 1 Oz to 2 Oz
As of April 20, 2026, recreational customers (21+) can now purchase up to 2 ounces of cannabis flower (or equivalent) per transaction.
That’s double the previous limit of 1 ounce.
The update comes from a broader reform effort aimed at modernizing the state’s cannabis industry and improving access for consumers.
What Counts as “Equivalent”?
Massachusetts regulators define how different product types like edibles, vapes, and concentrates convert into that 2-ounce total. So whether you’re mixing formats or sticking to one category, everything you buy still rolls up into a single combined limit of 2 ounces.
What Hasn’t Changed
You still need to be 21 or older to purchase cannabis.
Public consumption is still not allowed.
Possession limits outside of retail settings may differ, especially in public versus at home.
