In 2018, recreational cannabis became legal in the state of Massachusetts, but for nearly ten years, medical marijuana patients have been able to access their medicine in the Bay State. Adult-Use customers: Cannabis is legal for adult users (21+) in Massachusetts. There are no regulations against purchasing for another adult.
Medical Patients: Medical patients cannot purchase for another patient or adult. Medical patients may only purchase Cannabis for another person if you are a registered caregiver with the Massachusetts department of public health, and the patient that you documented as their caregiver. You must be 18 years or older—and a resident of Massachusetts—to be eligible for the Massachusetts Medical Use of Marijuana Program (Program). If you are younger than 18 years old, your parent or guardian must approve of your medical cannabis use, and you must have certification by two Certifying Health Care Providers, one of whom must be a pediatrician or pediatric specialist.
To get started, you will need to obtain a medical marijuana certification from a licensed physician in Massachusetts. The physician will need to provide you with a written recommendation that outlines the specific reasons why they believe that medical marijuana would be beneficial for you. Once you have this document, you can register with the Program online or by mail.
Once you are registered, you will be issued a Patient ID number. You will use this number to obtain a medical marijuana card from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. This card will allow you to purchase medical marijuana from any state-licensed dispensary in Massachusetts.
